Past Performance--"Surfacing: An Inventory of Helplessness" ran July 9-28, 2019 as part of the Capital Fringe Festival

Written by Austrian playwright Julya Rabinowich and translated into English by Karin Rosnizeck, "Surfacing"" features three characters (A, B, and C): a female refugee who is hiding underground (A), a kidnap victim (B) locked up in a basement, and a young man (C) imprisoned in his own home due to the threat of blood revenge. Each is trapped, unable to surface or take part in everyday life. The play explores their mental states, survival strategies, and the way their minds work through cycles of hope, fear, anger, numbness, and desperation.

Rabinowich was born in St. Petersburg, Russia and emigrated to Vienna, Austria at age seven. Her texts challenge what former International Organization for Migration director-general William Lacy Swing calls the "toxic narrative" of transnational refugees as the root cause of economic, political, and social crises and the current tendency to turn victims of terror into terrorists themselves. Instead, Rabinowich transforms this narrative by revealing the migrant experiences of trauma, persecution, and displacement. Here are some background readings and videos on global migration and the plight of refugees.
